Dext vs Hubdoc: The Short Answer
- You use Xero and only need bills and receipts in it. Start with what you already pay for. Hubdoc is included in Xero's Canadian Starter, Standard and Premium plans as long as it's connected to your Xero subscription, and every plan lists Smart Document Capture.
- Five or more people submit paperwork, or you run a bookkeeping practice. Dext's business plan is built around 5 users and 250 documents a month, with supplier statement extraction and practice tooling.
- You use QuickBooks Online. Hubdoc on its own is $12 USD a month. AutoEntry starts at C$19 a month for 50 credits and works with Xero, QuickBooks and Sage.
- You need to see which bank lines have no receipt, pull old receipts out of your inbox, or keep income and expenses in one place. That is the job SparkReceipt does.

Dext vs Hubdoc: How They Differ
Hubdoc is capture that comes with Xero. It reads supplier names, amounts, invoice numbers and due dates from bills and receipts, and publishes them to Xero or QuickBooks Online. Documents arrive by phone, email forwarding or upload. Xero ended Hubdoc's general bank statement fetching in 2022, so statements are usually uploaded like any other document. Hubdoc's own pricing page lists unlimited usage and multiple collaborators for $12 USD a month.
Dext is priced for teams. The business plan is C$31.50 a month billed annually for 5 users and 250 documents. Each month it includes 10 bank statement sheets, 5 documents with line items and 5 supplier statements. Beyond that, line items cost C$28.50 a month for 50 documents (or C$0.70 each) and bank statements C$17 a month for 50 sheets (or C$0.42 each).
AutoEntry charges by the document. Plans start at C$19 a month for 50 credits. A receipt or invoice uses 1 credit, an invoice with line items 2, and a bank or credit card statement 3 per page. Users are unlimited, and unused credits roll over for 90 days.
For a sole proprietor on Xero with a few dozen receipts a month, the Dext vs Hubdoc question usually ends with Hubdoc, because it is already paid for. Dext earns its price when several people submit paperwork or a practice collects documents for many clients.
What a Month Costs: A Worked Example
Take a sole proprietor on Xero with 60 receipts and bills a month. Ten of them are supplier invoices worth reading line by line, and the bank sends a 3-page statement.
| What the month uses | List price |
|---|
| Hubdoc | Captured on your Xero plan; line items not listed | No extra cost on Xero Starter, Standard or Premium |
| Dext (Business) | 60 of 250 documents; 10 line-item invoices, 5 above the allowance; 3 of 10 statement sheets | About C$35 a month: C$31.50 plus 5 line items at C$0.70 |
| AutoEntry | 50 × 1 credit + 10 × 2 credits + 3 pages × 3 credits = 79 credits | C$37 a month (the 100-credit plan) |
| SparkReceipt Elite | Unlimited documents and line items; statement lines use the monthly credits in the plan | $14.92 a month billed annually |
The gap opens as the paperwork grows. Double it and AutoEntry moves up to C$68 a month for 200 credits, Dext rises to about C$42, and SparkReceipt's price does not rise with the number of documents. If you are well under 50 documents a month, SparkReceipt Pro starts at $8.25 a month billed annually.
Hubdoc Pricing, and What Xero Already Includes
- Hubdoc: included in Xero's Canadian Starter, Standard and Premium plans at no extra cost, as long as it's connected to your Xero subscription. On its own it costs $12 USD a month after a 30-day trial.
- Xero Canada plans: Starter is C$25 a month (5 bills), Standard C$60 and Premium C$80, before tax, with an introductory discount on the first 3 months. Every plan lists Smart Document Capture: snap a receipt in the Xero app, email it or upload it, and Xero reads the details from receipts, invoices and rental statements. Multiple currencies need Premium.
If you are on Xero and your paperwork is mostly bills and receipts, try what the plan includes before paying for a third tool.
When SparkReceipt Is the Better Fit
Getting a receipt into your ledger is the easy part now. The work left is proving every bank line and keeping the records complete, and that is where SparkReceipt goes further:
- Every bank line matched to a receipt. Upload statements from any bank as PDF, CSV or Excel. The bank statement extractor matches each line to its receipt and flags the ones with nothing behind them, so the gaps show up before your accountant asks. (How matching works)
- Receipts from your inbox, including old ones. Connect Gmail, Outlook or any IMAP inbox and new receipts come in as they arrive. Email history extraction goes back through past emails to a date you choose, with the first 10,000 historical emails included. (Guide)
- Line items included. Every line of a supplier invoice is read and categorized at no extra cost, which matters when the GST/HST treatment differs from line to line.
- Income as well as expenses. Sales invoices and purchase receipts sit in the same records.
- Not tied to one ledger. Sync to QuickBooks Online or Xero, or export CSV and Excel for whatever your accountant uses. Your accountant joins free, and linked accounts keep more than one business separate under one login.
- Records the CRA accepts. The CRA accepts digital copies of receipts, and SparkReceipt keeps the original image with every record. See digital receipts and the CRA.
- 190 currencies, each converted at the rate on the purchase date, which matters if you buy from US suppliers.
Switching Without Losing Records
The CRA's retention rule does not change when you change tools: keep your records for six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to (see CRA record retention). Before you cancel anything:
- Export or download your documents from the tool you are leaving. Xero Central explains how to download or export documents from Hubdoc.
- Upload the files to SparkReceipt, and let email history extraction pull in the receipts that are still sitting in your inbox.
- Leave your ledger as it is. Anything already published to QuickBooks Online or Xero stays there, and new documents sync across with the receipt image attached.
What Dext and Hubdoc Do Well
Hubdoc costs nothing extra on Xero, and a second tool is extra work if Xero already covers what you need. Dext has mature tooling for accounting practices that collect documents from many clients, including supplier statement extraction. If either of those describes you, it may be the better choice.
Prices and limits come from each vendor's own pages in September 2026: Dext business pricing and extraction pricing (annual billing, CAD, excluding GST/HST), Hubdoc pricing, Xero Canada plans, and AutoEntry pricing (CAD). They change, so check before you buy. SparkReceipt is not affiliated with Dext, Hubdoc, Xero or AutoEntry.
