Connect Your AI Tool to SparkReceipt Over MCP

You can now connect your own AI tool — Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other MCP clients — directly to your SparkReceipt account and have it work with your receipts and expenses for you. It runs over MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard for connecting AI assistants to the tools and data they act on. This is live today.

For a while now, SparkAgent has let you command your books in plain language from inside SparkReceipt. MCP takes that same power and moves it into the AI tool you already work in. Ask your assistant to pull up last month's expenses, tag a batch of receipts, or reconcile a bank statement — and it runs the matching SparkReceipt action without you leaving the chat.

Your Assistant Acts As You — Nothing More

The most important thing to understand is where the boundaries sit. When you connect an AI tool, it acts as you, limited to your role's permissions. It only ever sees and changes your own data, and it can never do anything your account role wouldn't let you do yourself. There is no separate "admin" backdoor and no way for the tool to reach data that isn't yours.

Connecting runs over OAuth 2.1. You sign in on SparkReceipt's own page, in your own browser — the AI tool never sees your password. It only receives a limited access token, and you decide what that token is allowed to do.

You grant three permission levels, each ticked independently:

• Read your data — let the assistant search, list, and summarize.
• Create and update data — let it tag, categorize, edit, reconcile, and publish.
• Irreversible actions — the ones that can't be undone.

Granting one never grants another. Irreversible actions are never pre-selected — leave them off unless you specifically want the tool able to take a step you can't reverse. Grant the minimum you need.

Setting It Up

Everything lives under Settings → MCP in the SparkReceipt web app. There you'll find:

• A Server URL — https://api.app.sparkreceipt.com/mcp.
• Per-tool setup instructions — Claude Code connects with a single claude mcp add --transport http ... command; Cursor and Claude Desktop add SparkReceipt as a remote MCP server / connector. Any other MCP-capable tool connects the same way — paste the Server URL as a remote MCP server.
• A Connected apps list — see every tool you've linked, and disconnect any of them anytime.
• An activity log — a record of everything your connected tools have done.

Connecting is a per-user action: you connect your own assistant to your own data. That's it — from there you talk to your books in plain language.

What It Can Do

Once connected, your assistant runs the same 90+ actions that power SparkAgent inside the app — searching, tagging, categorizing, editing line items, reconciling bank statements, building reports, publishing to your integrations, and more. On top of those, MCP adds two actions that aren't exposed inside SparkAgent.

The one worth calling out is submit a document. Hand your assistant a receipt, invoice, or bank statement file and it sends it to SparkReceipt, where it runs through the same OCR and AI extraction pipeline as any web or mobile upload. You can send 1 to 5 files per document — handy for a multi-page invoice — up to 15 MB each. Each submission uses one scan from your quota, extraction runs in the background, and it's fully reversible: trashing the document undoes it.

A few example prompts to give you the shape of it:

• "List my July expenses over 100 dollars."
• "Tag every Uber receipt as Travel."
• "Match this bank statement against my receipts."

You ask; it picks the right action and runs it.

You Stay in Control

The design goal here is simple: give you real power without asking you to give up control. You choose which accounts a tool can reach and which permissions it holds. You can disconnect any connected app at any time. And the activity log shows you exactly what happened, so nothing runs in the dark.

• Passenger reimbursement — account for passengers you carry on a business trip.
• An account-level mileage currency — set the currency your mileage is valued in, per account.
• Per-trip PDF download — export any single trip as a PDF for your records or your accountant.
• Full editing of GPS trips — adjust the details of automatically tracked trips, not just manual ones.
